Do you have the Perfect ROLL OUT Sugar Cookie Recipe?

Here it is almost Thanksgiving.
I have been paging through the many free magazines that I receive through FREEBIZ online and I am drooling and also feeling majorly inferior when I am looking at the amazing cookies and sweets featured.
You see, I am 50 years old and I have Never, mind you I do mean never made a good batch of cookies.
Yesterday, I told hubby that I would like to really try hard to make some very pretty decorated sugar cookies, from scratch!  He did not laugh at me, but said to bake properly, I need to do things slowly (I do everything fast).
We got some beautiful snowflake cutters at Michael's yesterday, along with squeeze bottles for the decorating. I have some good cookie sheets in the garage somewhere, brand-new, in wrapping from about 5 years ago, that I want to use.
Now, the big problem is finding a mistake-proof, easy rolling, sugar cookie recipe.
I am putting a shout out to you people who have this gift.  Any easy, fool-proof, recipes would be highly appreciated.
I am almost laughing at myself because anytime I attempt to bake, I turn into a wild woman and get angry because I make such a mess of it.
I used to blame it on the oven, but I have had a few ovens over the years, and the same results.
Well, any help is welcomed.  Happy Sunday

Sugar Cookie Cutouts: (makes about 6 to 7 dozen depending on thickness)

3 sticks (1 1/2 cups) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Using a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and beat after each addition. Add vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add to batter in 3 additions. Stir until well combined.

Refrigerate the dough at least one hour or over night.
Roll out on a floured board until about 1/4 inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut into desired shapes. (i just made a batch using pumpkins, turkeys and maple leaf cutters) Transfer to ungreased cookie sheet.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Bake one tray at at time in the middle of the oven for 6 to 8 minutes. Cool on racks.

Frost with vanilla frosting dyed to your color preference. Decorate as desired.

My most favorite baking blog is bakerella.com

She bakes the most fabulous looking goodies, and writes step-by-step directions and posts pictures so you can follow along. It's absolutely fool proof. This past summer, I tried making her graduation cap pops for my sister's graduation party and they turned out wonderfully! It was simple, and following her instructions was easy as pie.
